If you’re planning family photos here in the Winston Salem Area or in your own area and wondering what to wear, you’re not alone.

The moms who reach out to me care deeply about how their images feel. They don’t want stiff. They don’t want trendy. They don’t want overly styled.

They want effortless, elevated and timeless.

And the truth is wardrobe is a major part of  what makes a portrait feel all those things. .

When chosen intentionally, clothing becomes the quiet foundation that allows connection, movement, and emotion to shine. When chosen poorly, it competes for attention.

Here’s how to get it exactly right.

Choose Mom’s Outfit First

This is the most important rule.

Your outfit sets the entire tone of the session:  the color palette, the level of formality, the softness of the final gallery.

When mom feels beautiful and confident, the entire family relaxes.

Look for pieces that:

  • Move naturally (flowy silhouettes photograph beautifully)
  • Feel refined but not fussy
  • Complement your natural coloring
  • Allow you to sit, kneel, and hold your babies comfortably

A linen or gauze dress in cream, muted blue, or soft taupe immediately creates that light feel.  Build everyone else around you. Never the reverse.

Neutral Palettes That Work Beautifully

Here are palettes that photograph beautifully throughout the year:

Spring: cream, soft sage, dusty blue, warm blush
Summer: ivory, oatmeal, muted coastal blue, sand
Fall: camel, warm cream, muted rust, soft charcoal
Winter: ivory, deep beige, soft gray, muted evergreen

Soft, cohesive tones allow the light to wrap around you gently. They create images that feel expensive without trying to.This is the simplest starting point: stay muted, stay cohesive, avoid high contrast.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Matching outfits feel dated. Coordinated outfits feel elevated.

Choose 3–4 complementary tones and distribute them naturally throughout the family.

For example:

  • Mom in a cream linen dress
  • Dad in a soft blue or taupe button-down
  • Daughter in a delicate floral that ties both tones together
  • Son in khaki or light denim with a neutral knit

The goal is harmony,  not uniformity.

When done well, the overall look feels organic, almost accidental… but beautifully intentional.

Texture Is What Makes Photos Feel Luxurious

Color sets the palette. Texture creates dimension.

Some of the most beautiful materials for family portraits include:

  • Linen
  • Soft knits
  • Gauze cotton
  • Subtle wool blends in cooler months
  • Flowy chiffon
  • Light denim

Texture catches light. It adds depth without heaviness. It elevates simple pieces into something timeless.

This is often the missing ingredient between “nice outfits” and images that feel like they belong in a magazine.

Keep Patterns Subtle

If you choose prints, keep them small-scale and muted.

Delicate florals or faint stripes can be lovely, especially for little girls. Bold graphics, loud patterns, or heavy logos tend to distract from what matters most — your connection.

When in doubt, solid neutrals with texture are always safe.

Let the Clothing Support the Movement

The most meaningful images happen between poses.

Your child reaching up for you.
Wind catching your dress.
A laugh you didn’t plan.

Clothing should move with you, not restrict you.

Stiff fabrics, tight fits, and overly structured pieces limit that natural interaction. Soft, breathable pieces allow you to settle into each other comfortably.

And that’s when the magic unfolds.

A Curated Wardrobe, Thoughtfully Selected

Now you’ve got the idea and feel for what to wear,  the question is where do I find these outfits? Part of the  portrait  experience for my families at Adrienne Elizabeth Photography includes access to a carefully curated client wardrobe for mothers and young children and shirts and knits for Dads. So you don’t have to shop, and return and shop more.

Each piece in my client wardrobe has been selected in neutral tones and soft textures that photograph beautifully in Winston Salem’s natural light.

The Goal Is Timeless, Not Trendy

Ten years from now, you won’t remember what was trending.

You will remember:
The weight of your toddler on your hip.
The way your husband leaned in close.
The softness of that season of life.

When wardrobe is simple, cohesive, and elevated, your images feel enduring,  not dated.

If you’re ready for family portraits that feel effortless and beautifully refined, I would love to guide you through every detail,  from wardrobe to artwork design.
